Pros: -Able to overclock well -HIS iTurbo software makes overclocking and fan control a breeze -Massive cooler keeps it at 68c after hours of gaming -Not too expensive -Absolute beast when used in CrossFire Cons: -The cooler is huge, it takes up some real estate in the case -Sound, sometimes it sounds like the fan's bearing squeaks a little Other Thoughts: This GPU is great for the price tag, I haven't had one problem like the other review seem to have had. I've had mine overclocked at 1100 core 1300 memory since day one.
I'd recommend looking up some professional technical reviews, the numbers this thing pushes are impressive. Pros: None Cons: After a couple of months of owning the card, not doing much gaming due to work, I finally had some free time to put this thing through its paces. Well, after playing some CoD for a bit, the screen went black and it was clear that the computer crashed. Tried a few other games, same thing, random computer crashes while gaming. Ok, go to Newegg to RMA it and, SURPRISE, you can't RMA it after 30 days. Not even for a replacement.
Gotta love a retailer that refuses to stand by the products that the sell, especially considering the amount of business that I do with them. So, I go through the painful RMA process with Lexy Pacific. After two dreadfully long months, they finally get my card back to me.
Pop it in my PC and, what a surprise, I get a BIOS code indicating that the card is DEFECTIVE!!! So after spending nearly $300 on a video card, dealing with a retailer that doesn't support their products long enough to determine if there are defects, and a lousy manufacturer that makes you wait two months to receive a busted card, I have no idea what the hell I'm going to do. I contacted Lexy Pacific. I want my money back or a different card. We'll see how that goes.
No matter what happens, I will NEVER buy another HIS card and I will NEVER buy a video card from Newegg again. Pros: Very nice card, very fast and unlike others I have not experienced any crashes. I would recommend this card to those who know how to build and trouble shoot their own CPUs. This card is not for beginners due to the updates/tweaking required to prevent crashes. Cons: Once installed you must update everything or you will have BSOD crashes etc. Other Thoughts: Overall I think this is a very good card for the money! I won't have to update my Graphics card for another 2 years thanks to this card IMHO.
Pros: Wish I had something to say here - that would mean I had gotten the card to work.;- Cons: Built a brand new system and everything worked great except that this card couldn't be recognized by the motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4. I borrowed cards from other machines and they worked fine, and tried this card in a 6.5 year old XPS 720 and it worked fine there, so it wasn't bad either. I worked with several technicians including guys at Gigabyte for 2 weeks and never got the card working. So I finally gave up and RMA'd it.
Thought I would share so other people wouldn't try to put these two pieces of hardware together and waste their time and money too. Pros: 3D games look great for the 20 minutes it works. Cons: Similar to the other review - video card crashes and burns after playing a 3D game for 20 minutes or less, forcing a hard reboot. Everything else ran fine. Other Thoughts: There were no reviews here when I purchased this, which was a risk in and of itself. Now there are 2 out of 2 negative reviews about the same issue. But maybe others have more luck.
Anyway, Newegg refunded me no problem, but I think I'll pass on this specific model which seems to have eluded QA.
HIS Radeon HD 7970 X Turbo Video Card Review HIS has launched its custom version of the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition complete with a massive factory overclock. Could this overclock, along with the IceQ X2 cooling system, make it the fastest single card on the market? We will compare it to the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning and a reference AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition to find out! Overclocking the HIS 7970 X Turbo Video Card Throughout this evaluation we will be using our highest stable overclock after voltage tweaking as a fourth video card in the evaluation, in order to express the full potential and amount of performance that the HIS 7970 X Turbo Video Card has in store. Please remember that every video card is different and the overclocks we achieve here are not necessarily what you will be able to achieve.
To overclock the HIS 7970 X Turbo we used HIS’s iTurbo software to overclock the card. Overclocking with HIS iTurbo To overclock the HIS 7970 X Turbo we used HIS’s software to overclock the card. The software includes all of the expected knobs and dials necessary to properly overclock the video card, including an information panel, fan control, clock speed, and voltage control.
We found it to be usable for the most part, but the application is not as keyboard friendly as other utilities that we have used. When applying a new clock speed, it allows you to type in a new value, but will do nothing when you press enter (and at the same time, not allow you to apply the new setting). Only when we click on another value within the software are we able to apply the changed setting. This became challenging when changing several values at once. The first screenshot of GPU-Z is the out-of-box HIS 7970 X Turbo at its stock speeds. The second screenshot is HIS iTurbo verifying the stock configuration.
A reference AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition has a GPU Frequency of 1000MHz with the GPU Boost set to 1050MHz and memory frequency of 6GHz. Keep in mind that the GPU boost frequency does not work the same as the Kepler based video cards, and will deliver the full 1050MHz speed unless temperatures or TDP go beyond preset thresholds.
HIS 7970 X Turbo is configured at 1180MHz, which represents a factory overclock of 130MHz. The memory frequency was left at the reference 6GHz speed. For our overclocking efforts, we set the power limit to +20% (the maximum allowed) and GPU voltage to 1300mV and the memory voltage to 1575mV, which allowed us to dial up the core clock to 1245MHz and the memory to 1695MHz (6.78GHz GDDR5). We were able to run the card as high as 1295MHz without crashing; however, we were met with artifacts at that speed no matter what we did with voltage. The artifacts gradually diminished as we lowered the GPU clock until we received an unblemished experience at 1245MHz.
The artifacts were GPU clock related, as lowering the memory clock to 1000MHz did not remove the artifacts. There were no differences in memory overclocks between the default voltage and using a higher value.
